Robert Downey Jr. Looking to Reboot ‘Perry Mason’ for HBO

Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to bring back legal drama Perry Mason. According to Variety, the Iron Man actor and True Detective director Nic Pizzolatto is currently talking to the network for a drama project based on the legal series.

Insiders are saying that the project will be a TV series — like the original — rather than a movie, and the pair has been talking to HBO about its development as early as May. Downey Jr. is attached to play the lead, while Pizzolatto is attached to write.

Downey Jr. had originally wanted to revive Perry Mason, one of television’s longest-running and most successful legal series spanning from 1957 to 1966, for a Warner Bros. film back in 2011. After receiving mixed reviews for 2014’s The Judge, the studio and Downey Jr’s production company started looking at the reboot as a series.

Should the series happen, this will make Downey Jr’s first television series appearance since Ally McBeal.
