The Internet Is (and Isn’t) Digging Zendaya as the New Mary Jane in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Marvel Studios is take some commendable steps to shake up many of their practically all-white superhero films. Although the comic book features numerous African and African-American characters, the upcoming Black Panther is swinging for the fences by including some of the very best Black actors and actresses working today, including Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman.

The studio also just cast Zendaya as the next Mary Jane opposite Tom Holland in Super-Man: Homecoming, which has brought about a backlash among fans on social media.

Played by Kirsten Dunst in the past, MJ is traditionally a redheaded Caucasian, characteristics that some fans apparently feel are an important part of the character’s presence.
