Kate Gosselin Sent Her Son with Special Needs Away to Get Help
One of Kate Gosselin’s sextuplets, Collin, has been sent away by his mother after the Jon & Kate Plus 8 alum discovered that her son has special needs. In a new interview with People, the mom-of-eight reveals that she’s only living with seven of her children at the moment.
“Collin has special needs,” she says. “[There’s] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things. This has been a struggle we’ve had for a very long time, and it’s one I’ve dealt with on my own. I’ve felt very alone in this. By the same token, it’s not something that has only impacted me or him — our entire family has been impacted.”
Gosselin, who appears on the cover of magazine with all her children except Collin, adds that the 12-year-old has “enrolled in a program that is helping him learn the skills he needs to be the best him he can be.”
“We miss him so much, so it’s been hard because there is a huge hole in our family without him here. But it comforts us to know he’s where he needs to be right now, and I can feel good about that,” she says.
“When your kids go to college, do you miss them? Yes, but you reassure yourself that they are getting so much out of it,” Gosselin continues. “And that’s the same sort of investment I feel like I’ve made Collin’s future.”
Collin is one of the sextuplets Gosselin welcomed on May 10, 2004 with then-husband Jon Gosselin. He is the brother of Alexis, Leah, Hannah, Joel and Aaden as well as the younger sibling to twins Cara and Madelyn.
Earlier this month, Collin’s father revealed that he hasn’t seen all eight of his children at once for more than three years and that he has been estranged from his eldest daughters.
“You know, it was great, and then Madelyn and Cara just stopped coming, around 12-13 [years old]. I didn’t question it. I was just like, ‘Hey, do what you want, be with your friends’ and then it just became they’re not coming,” he told Entertainment Tonight, adding that he has not seen Collin for the last two years. “I was just focusing on the ones that did come and then a couple years went by and then Collin stopped coming. I thought, maybe he just wants to do stuff with Mommy or whatever, and then it became long term.”
“I don’t really talk to my ex-wife, so it’s all kind of Helter Skelter,” he added. “I have my life and she has her life. We have our life with our kids separately. We don’t go anywhere together.”
