Amber Heard Calls Out Johnny Depp’s Shady Charity Donations
Amber Heard is not happy with how Johnny Depp is proceeding with their divorce settlement. The actress’ camp believes Depp is acting shady when it comes to giving Heard’s money — all $7 million of it — to her charities of choice.
Right after Depp wrote two checks of undisclosed sums to the ACLU and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Heard’s team issued a statement on Thursday (August 25, 2016) denouncing the donations. According to them, Depp is shortchanging Heard as he’ll receive a charitable tax deduction for directly donating to these charities as opposed to handing the money to his ex-wife to give away.
“If Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honor the full amount by donating $14M to charity, which after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7M payment obligation to Amber,” someone from Heard’s camp told TMZ. “We would also insist that the full amount be paid immediately and not drawn out over many years.”
The rep continued, “Anything less would be a transparent attempt by Johnny’s counsel, Laura Wasser and Patti Glaser, to reduce their client’s true payment by half under the guise of newfound concern for charities that he has never previously supported.”
Heard’s people are claiming that by Depp donating $3.5 million to each charity in installments over time, he will end up giving less than the agreed upon amount in his settlement because of tax deductions. They argue that the money is not Depp’s to donate and that Heard should be writing the checks herself.
As previously reported, Depp made the first of many donations to two charities on behalf of Heard this week. A spokesperson for the actor said, “Ms. Heard’s generosity in giving to these wonderful causes is deeply respected.”
