Just days after Ryan Lochte‘s sponsors dropped him over revelation that he had lied about getting robbed while attending the Rio Olympics, the Olympian has scored himself a new endorsement deal.
The swimmer has inked a new endorsement deal with Pine Brothers, a company that produces throat lozenges, to star in an upcoming campaign about their drops being “Forgiving On Your Throat.” (See what they did there?) Lochte will appear in both print and TV adverts.
“We all make mistakes, but they’re rarely given front-page scrutiny. He’s a great guy who has done incredible work with charities. I’m confident that Pine Bros. fans will support our decision to give Ryan a second chance,” Pine Brothers CEO Rider McDowell tells TMZ.
Lochte’s deal comes amid news that the 32-year-old has been summoned back to Brazil to give testimony in front of the country’s Justice Department in Rio de Janeiro over his fabricated robbery story. Officials say the Olympic medalist must appear in person in a Brazilian court if he wants the opportunity for a plea deal.
As previously reported, Lochte sparked an international scandal when claimed that he and three other teammates were robbed at gunpoint following a night of drinking and partying. Security camera footage at the gas station where Lochte was at later showed that the athletes had vandalized the establishment’s bathroom and got into an altercation with its security guards instead.
“I’m not making me being intoxicated like an excuse, I’m not doing that at all,” Lochte later explained when confronted with the video. “It’s how you want to make it look like. Whether you call it a robbery, whether you call it extortion, or us paying just for the damages, like, we don’t know. All we know is that there was a gun pointed in our direction, and we were demanded to give money.”
Since the incident, Lochte is said to be in talks to appear the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.
