Alicia Vikander & Michael Fassbender Chat About Their Relationship, On Screen and Off
Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender are two world-famous actors, but they like to keep their private lives private. However, as a real-life couple playing two people falling in love in their forthcoming film The Light Between Oceans, their private life is about to get some serious scrutiny (especially if the film gets some nominations when awards season rolls around). The two actors sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss their new movie as well as attempting to keep their relationship to themselves.
“It’s the worst thing if you’re sitting there in the theater, going, ‘Oh, that’s the guy who dates this person and likes to do this in the morning and that in the afternoon.’ Then you’re just watching a brand, as opposed to an actor, ” Fassbender said.
Vikander chimed in that she enjoys the mystery of not knowing an actor’s personal life when watching a film because it frees her up to get lost in the story.
“I remember in Sweden, I used to set the alarm for 2 or 3 a.m. and get up with my mom to watch the Oscars,” she said. “But for me, that was the same as the stories I saw up on the movie screen… That’s what I mean — I love the mystery behind it all.”
In The Light Between Oceans, Fassbender and Vikander play Tom and Isabel Sherbourne, a couple who manage a lighthouse off the coast of Western Australia. They are desperate to become parents but are repeatedly met with tragedy. Then one day, a baby in a rowboat miraculously washes ashore, forcing them to make a life-altering decision.
Although Fassbender and Vikander’s characters fall in love on screen, and they are together in real life, the actor maintains that that doesn’t mean their actual love story is in the film.
“It wasn’t the first time in a movie either of us had played somebody who is falling in love. There is an element of separation there,” Fassbender said of their on-screen relationship.
The 27-year-old actress added that their connection was very natural, but she refused to elaborate anymore.
“And I think we’ve made a clear statement that we keep certain things just between us. It was very easy to unite, but that’s quite personal.”
