The actors met and fell in love on the Oceans set but have kept their romance on the down low. They made their first public appearance as a couple during the awards season, including the Oscars where Vikander won Best Supporting Actress for her work in The Danish Girl.
In Light Between Oceans, they play a couple living on an isolated island as lighthouse keepers, who raise a baby girl as their own after she washes ashore in a boat.
“I knew that Michael was attached to play Tom, and I think he’s one of the most brilliant actors out there,” Vikander told reporters (via People) about how she mulled taking on the role. “I was up for the game, but I was very nervous. I got people that picked me up when I fell and who pushed me. Michael’s support in those scenes were a big part of me daring to go all the way, which was needed for the role of Isabel.”
Fassbender praised his co-star as well, but admitted to being a little afraid of her. “I was kind of scared when Alicia came, she was so fierce and hungry, and it was something that it’s always a great thing to see in an actor who is getting an opportunity who hasn’t been well known yet. I really felt like I had to get my s— together and just be there and be as present as she was.”
The Light Between Oceans hits theaters Friday.
