“She was the one to put the brakes on the relationship,” a source told the publication. “Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she was comfortable with. Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection but Tom didn’t listen to her concerns when she brought them up.”
The insider added that Hiddleston is “embarrassed that the relationship fizzled out.”
According to recent reports, Swift was beginning to doubt Hiddleston prior to the breakup and started questioning the actor’s true intentions after he had asked her to be his date to the upcoming Emmy Awards.
“Tom wants their relationship to be public, even asking Taylor to go to the Emmys with him, but Taylor wants to keep her private life private,” an insider told the Daily Mail. “Tom’s need for their relationship to be so public so quickly makes her uncomfortable.”
The source added, “She tried to be OK with it in the beginning but fears he is in love with the idea of her and not falling in love with her for the right reasons.”
Though they travelled to three different continents, four different countries, and three different states within the first few weeks of their relationship, things between the twosome noticeably simmered down since Hiddleston started filming Thor: Ragnarok in Australia as Swift adjusted to life off the road in New York City.
Swift and Hiddleston reportedly had “a major argument” last month about their long distance relationship, resulting in the latter allegedly lying back to the United States for a two-day stay to smooth things over with the “Bad Blood” singer.
“They weren’t spending as much time together,” someone close to the situation told Us Weekly in August. “Tom is busier than her right now, so it’s been hard.”
In July, Hiddleston insisted that his romance with Swift is “not a publicity stunt” after he took his girlfriend to meet his mother in England only after weeks of dating.
“How best to put this? That notion is — look, the truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we’re very happy,” he told The Hollywood Reporter while discussing his Emmy-nominated role on AMC’s The Night Manager. “Thanks for asking. That’s the truth.”
