Demi Lovato to Perform at Global Citizen Festival After Selena Gomez Cancels Tour

Demi Lovato is filling in for Selena Gomez as a headlining act at this year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York City. The lineup change follows news that Gomez canceled the rest of her Revival Tour due to struggles with anxiety and depression stemming from her battle with Lupus.

“The Global Citizen Festival combines music and activism in a way that inspires and affects millions around the world. I am proud to support this amazing organization’s ongoing efforts to improve global healthcare and to end extreme poverty,” Lovato tells People.

The festival, which will take place in Central Park on Sept. 24 to encourage world leaders to enact policy changes that’ll end extreme global poverty by the year 2030, will also feature headliners like Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Metallica and Major Lazer.

Gomez was previously slated to perform, but left an empty slot after announcing that she’ll be taking a musical hiatus for the rest of the year to focus on her mental and physical health.

“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” Gomez said in a statement late August. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.”

In 2013, Gomez prematurely ended her Star Dance Tour for personal issues.
