Patrick Dempsey Opens Up About What It Took to Save His Marriage
The former Grey’s Anatomy star reveals his struggle to save his marriage and make his family his top priority.
In this week’s issue of People, heartthrob Patrick Dempsey chatted about his matrimonial turmoil that made headlines when his then-estranged wife Jillian Fink filed for divorce in January of last year. The actor also discussed his journey to a more happy and stable home-life.
“Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of,” he said before explaining that things only got better when he and his wife of 16 years started examining what really mattered to them. “I didn’t feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That’s where it started.”
The 50-year-old TV star went on to explain that leaving Grey’s Anatomy in 2015 as well as taking time away from racing cars, a passion of the actor’s, were sober choices made to give his marriage and family more energy and attention.
“You can only do one thing at a time and do it well,” he said. “I [learned] to prioritize. Our union has to be the priority. I wasn’t prepared to give up on her and she wasn’t either. We both wanted to fight for it.”
Dempsey also admitted that the journey isn’t over. He and his wife are still working to help their marriage go the distance. But, he says it’s not all sacrifice…
“You’ve got to keep at it,” the actor said. “You’ve got to communicate, and stay open and not get lazy. And not give up. And lots of sex!”
