Leonardo DiCaprio made his first visit to the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, to promote his new environmental documentary, Before the Flood.

The film documents DiCaprio’s campaign to raise global awareness about the dangers of climate change in his role as a UN Ambassador of Peace.  It’s a cause very close to DiCaprio’s heart, as he traveled to over 20 countries to speak with scientists, politicians, and activists to find out how humans, effectively, can do their part to slow climate change.

DiCaprio told the audience before the film premiered (via Toronto Sun), “The origins of wanting to do a movie like this was to give the scientific community a voice. We’ve long ignored the prediction of the scientific community. Ninety-seven percent of the scientific community agrees that we are contributing to the issue of climate change in such a major way that we are altering the course of the future as we know it. We’re risking not only our life on Earth but future generations.”

“We are truly at a turning point in history,” DiCaprio added. “And this issue depends on the education of the public and the evolution of our species to combat what is the largest crisis we’ve ever faced. We really hope all of you get behind (this cause)…and really use your vote in the future to try to empower political leaders to make a difference.”

National Geographic will air the documentary October 31.
