Lady Gaga Insists ‘Perfect Illusion’ Is Not Diss Track About Ex Fiancé Taylor Kinney

After years of anticipation, Lady Gaga finally released a new single last week, “Perfect Illusion.”

The single, which fans can’t seem to get enough of, seems to tell the story of a romance gone sour after someone (Gaga?) finds out their partner is nothing but a fraud. It’s a particularly interesting story to tell, especially when you remember that Gaga called off her engagement to longtime beau Taylor Kinney just a few months ago.

The irony is not lost on the singer, who during a radio interview with Andy Cohen, decided to address “the elephant in the room” herself. Not even waiting for the host to probe, Gaga posed the question herself, “…like, is it about Taylor is what everyone’s wondering?”

“I love Taylor so much,” she answered before adding, “This song is not a hit out against Taylor. He’s my best friend.”

“This song is just about not only feelings I’ve had, but that he’s had, my friends have had, that my sister has and her relationship,” she continued. “It’s a record about all of us….I would never use my song, or wanna use the public to hurt anyone that I love so much.”

Gaga continued to divulge on her relationship with her ex, revealing that they’re not so much apart as they are just trying to figure things out. “I don’t know if I would even say it that way,” she replied when asked if she would consider themselves “consciously uncoupled,” a la Gwyneth Paltrow. “I don’t think we’ve un-anything. We’re just two people figuring it out.”
