WATCH: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling Rave About Each Other at ‘La La Land’ Premiere
The musical film made its debut at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 12, 2016. Audience members gave the film three standing ovations. We feel major Oscar buzz heading their way!
Stone portrays a budding actress in Hollywood who falls for a jazz pianist, played by Gosling. Now, we’re all well aware of both actors’ musical abilities, including Stone’s Broadway stint in Cabaret and Gosling’s work in the Mickey Mouse Club. Not to mention, the film is directed by Damien Chazelle, the mastermind behind Oscar-bait film Whiplash. So, we expect nothing less than perfection.
La La Land marks the third time that the duo has graced the big screen together. Although their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, the actors confessed their love for each other (and the film) on the red carpet that evening.
“We made two films together and now three, and so you know it’s great to work with people you know,” said Gosling. “I think it brings the best out of them because you know one another, and you are able to help each other in a way that you can’t if you’re strangers.”
During a Q&A panel that followed the film’s premiere, Gosling jokingly stated that he enjoyed working with Stone because he believes “she’s secretly Canadian.”
“That’s why we get along so well,” Gosling said. “She’s wildly apologetic for no reason at all.”
In following suit with Gosling’s public admiration for the actress, Stone did not hesitate to gush about her on-screen love interest as well.
“I just think he’s great,” said Stone. “He’s a fantastic actor and it’s just so much fun to work with him and that’s kind of all there is to it.”
Yet, she added that “what Damien wrote is really beautiful and nostalgic and sweet” and that it was “nice to be part of something that hopefully gives people joy.”
