Emmys 2016: Ratings Hit an All-Time Low

Emmys 2016: Red Carpet Arrivals
See who we spotted on the red carpet!

Television’s biggest night wasn’t actually television’s biggest night. In fact, the 2016 Emmys saw terrible ratings when it came to actual viewership.

The primetime telecast, which aired on ABC, averaged about 11.9 million viewers on Sunday night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The abysmal stat — totaling an 8.7 overnight rating — fell below the previous all-time low set in 1990. (Hey, at least it did better than the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, right?)

Though the ceremony featured a record-breaking win for Game of Thrones, more people tuned into Sunday Night Football for a game between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings.

CBS’ first installment of its true-crime special, The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey, also saw major viewership, averaging 10.3 million viewers while on the air.

Currently, the highest-rated Emmys is still 2013’s telecast with host Neil Patrick Harris.
