Taraji P. Henson Drags 50 Cent Over ‘Empire’ Diss
Taraji P. Henson brought out Cookie Lyons’ signature sass when 50 Cent attempted to come for her TV show, Empire. When the rapper, who is also a producer on Starz’s Power, tried to suggest that the rivaling Fox series had dropped in ratings, Henson clapped back. Hard.
“Well look at the bright side at least. You can eat your trophies,” 50 Cent initially wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post of a headline about Empire’s ratings. “I was talking to old girl but you felt like you had to respond. SMH you know I love you cookie. I got a new show for you BMF COMING SOON !!!#EFFENVODKA.”
Responding with her own screenshot of an article, Henson fired back and shared a statement about how her show “remains the No. 1 show on broadcast TV.”
“For the confused ppl. Do REAL research!!! Loose change makes sooooooo much UNNECESSARY NOISE. STILL LOOKING FOR THAT DAMN CENT SIGN!!! I guess it’s obsolete,” she wrote in an Instagram post from her own account. “AGAIN CONGRATS ON YOUR SUCCESS BLACK MAN!!! @50cent.”
Despite the spat with 50 Cent, Henson gave a shoutout to Naturi Naughton, who stars in Power. “Sooooooooo proud of you @naturi4real I WANT YOU TO KNOW I will NEVER let any NEGATIVITY come between the LOVE I have for my sisters!!!” Taraji shared in another post. “As women we put up with enough BS. I will NEVER add to that stress and heartache!!! YOU ARE DOPE on #Power and in life!!! #BlackGirlMagic SHINE BABY SHINE.”
However, 50 Cent wasn’t ready to back down just yet. After seeing Henson’s response, he continued to take a dig at the actress — even going as for far as claiming that he was working on a show to replace Empire on Fox.
“All this back and forth shit is starting to turning me on cookie, LMAO I ran into Lee Daniels at the gym on Sunset Blvd. he asked why I didn’t except his offer to be on EMPIRE. I told him I have a lot going on, I’m actually working on the show FOX is gonna replace EMPIRE with, he looked at me like…why the fuck are you doing that?” he wrote. “It’s because I’m a drug dealer, and I was taught to get in, get your weight up, then take over. So that’s the deal #EFFENVODKA #smsaudio #FRIGO.”
Henson’s co-star, Jussie Smollett, also jumped into the conversation with a lengthy comeback for 50 Cent. Calling the “In Da Club” emcee “petty,” Smollett wrote in the comments, “I’ve always taken the high road when you’ve said our show was too gay, was stealing the word ‘power’ in our marketing from your show, or was too whatever you felt like saying at the moment… but now you’re messing with @TarajiPHenson.”
“What I don’t respect is how detrimental you don’t realize (or perhaps just do’t care) you are,” he continued. “Every time one of us, from Kanye to Empire (both of which who continue to win), have some success, instead [of] celebrating (or just keeping quiet) you have fallen for that classic “All Lives” banana in the tailpipe. You can say what you want or poke fun at sexuality or who I love but guess what? You’ve never heard me disrespect a woman once.”
He added, “It’s our responsibility to protect our women. you’re in your 40s brother. It’s time to leave all childish, pettiness behind.”
