Kiefer Sutherland Opens Up About Julia Roberts Calling Off Their Wedding at the Last Minute
Kiefer Sutherland, star of the new series Designated Survivor, recently sat down with Jess Cagle to talk about the end of 24 and his admiration for Julia Roberts following her decision to call off their wedding in 1991.
“And I think it took a lot of courage, even amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, ‘I can’t do this,’” he said, via Daily Mail, when discussing the flurry of wedding planning at the time. Prepping for the highly-publicized nuptials included decorating a soundstage at 20th Century Fox for the ceremony, a guest list of 150 and Roberts’ $8,000 wedding dress.
“She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us became something so big,” Sutherland lamented.
After all the planning, Roberts called off the wedding three days before the ceremony and was soon seen around town with Sutherland’s pal Jason Patric. But with 25 years of hindsight, the 49-year-old TV star only has fond memories of his onetime fiancée.
“We were young and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over.”
