Solange Won’t Mind If You Compare Her to Beyoncé

Beyonce, Jay Z and Solange Issue Joint Statement After Elevator Incident
"Of course sometimes shit goes down when there's a billion dollars on an elevator."

Solange isn’t surprised that people are comparing her new album, A Seat at the Table, to Beyoncé‘s Lemonade. As someone who shares the same parents as Queen Bey, she explains that it shouldn’t be a shock to critics that their records, which were both released this year, are similar in tone and message.

“It shouldn’t be surprising that two people who grew up in the same household with the same parents who are very, very aware—just like everyone else is—of all of the inequalities and the pain and suffering of our people right now, would create art that reflects that,” Solange tells The Fader of her freshly released LP, which touches on themes of racism, sexuality and social injustices black women face in the modern society.

I’m really proud of my sister and I’m really proud of her record and her work and I’ve always been. As far as I’m concerned, she’s always been an activist from the beginning of her career and she’s always been very, very black,” she continues. “My sister has always been a voice for black people and black empowerment. And I give so much of that credit to my parents.”

In fact, the family has nothing but love for each other. In a new Instagram post, Beyoncé and Solange’s mother, Tina Knowles, gushed about A Seat at the Table and how proud she is of her daughter for creating such a work of art. Referencing Kanye West’s infamous MTV Video Music Award speech, in which the rapper interrupted Taylor Swift to declare Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” as “one of the best videos of all time,” Knowles proudly spoke about her daughter’s achievements.

“I’m sorry Solange I’m a let you finish , but I have to say that I have to finish and Beyonce and myself and Kelly and Angie have often had conversations about you saying ‘we will cherish the day that the world knows how talented and creative and amazing an artist you are,'” Knowles wrote. “I do believe that the day has arrived thank you Almighty God!!! You are-awesome and thank you to all the fans who supported this record you are awesome also !!”
