Pop Stars and Flop Stars: Lady Gaga’s ‘Joanne’ Exceeds Expectations, Justin ‘Baby’ Bieber Throws Multiple Tantrums
Welcome back to Pop Stars and Flop Stars, which, as I explained earlier, is a revitalized (and shortened) restructuring of the feature formerly called Pop Power Ranking. Here’s the drill: each week, I’ll name a Pop Star — someone who secured the lion’s share of No. 1s, trophies, and/or other cultural gold stars (both tangible and intangible) — and one Flop Star who… well, you get the idea. And that’s about all there is to say. Let’s get into it.
This Week’s Pop Star: Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga, who just released what might be the best album of her career (so far), is set to conquer to Billboard 200 chart next week. Early estimates had Joanne moving around 140,000 units (SPS), but revised estimates have her pushing closer to 200,000. If the latter prediction becomes a reality, Gaga will have scored the year’s second-biggest debut by a female artist (behind, of course, Beyoncé‘s Lemonade). Coming off of the “notorious flop” ARTPOP, and without a recent Top 10 single to her name, that’s actually pretty damn impressive. As Joanne slays the charts — both the standard and the deluxe editions are in the Top 5 on iTunes, with the deluxe sitting pretty at No. 1 — Gaga herself has been amping up the promotional efforts. She killed performances of “A-Yo” and “Million Reasons” on the highest-rated episode of SNL so far this year, she’s appearing on Carpool Karaoke tonight, and she wraps up her Dive Bar Tour this week. What a time to be
alive a Little Monster.
- Kings of Leon, whose Walls tops the Billboard 200 album chart this week
- JoJo, whose first album in 10 years debuts this week at No. 6 on the Album 200
- Ariana Grande, whose “Side to Side” continues to rise on the Hot 100, giving her Dangerous Woman era the hit it needed (some would say deserved)
