This Is What Zayn Malik Thinks of One Direction Fanfiction
Though Zayn Malik claims he had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad time in One Direction, the former boy bander seemingly does have a better outlook on the stories their fans would write about them.
In his upcoming autobiography titled Zayn, the “Pillowtalk” singer touches on fanfiction written by Directioners. While ex-bandmate Liam Payne has said in the past that he finds slash pairings involving the boys to be “weird” and “intimidating,” Malik seems to be a little more — ahem — open about it.
“When I was still in One Direction, fans would write stories based on me and the other lads and publish them online. I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty unnerving reading things about yourself as a character from somebody else’s imagination – but it’s cool to see that so many fans engaged with the band on their own terms like that,” he writes in an excerpt on Wattpad. “It’s crazy to think that we inspired so many different stories and the opportunity for so much creativity from so many people all over the world.”
“My favourite stuff, personally, is fan art. I love seeing how many different ways people interpret my lyrics and my style, and it’s so cool that they share that with me,” he continues. “It’s also weirdly touching to see how many talented people out there choose to apply that talent to something connected with me and my music. It’s really humbling.”
“I’m going to show you as much as I can so that you can judge me on my own terms, not on what the press or anyone else says,” he adds in the book’s first few pages.
Zayn, which will be a collection of notes, drawings and never-before-seen personal photos, is slated to hit shelves on Nov. 1. The word’s still out as to whether Malik is actually a Larry shipper.
