Vanessa Marano Knew ‘Gilmore Girls’ Fans Would Hate Her Character, April

Vanessa Marano was aware that Gilmore Girls fans might not like April Nardini.

Although it isn’t her fault that her character was the show’s most hated character, the Switched at Birth actress knew that fans wouldn’t be too thrilled with the idea that her existence would end up breaking up Luke and Lorelai.

“I was like, ‘Oh my god, they’re giving Luke a daughter. Oh my GOD, she’s gonna ruin their relationship. Oh my god, I hate her already.’ I have to play her,” she told BuzzFeed. “It was my last chance to ever get a real part on Gilmore Girls.”

But despite all the hate, Marano admitted that April is one of her favorite characters that she’s ever been able to play. “Everyone loves Luke and Lorelai, and that’s the storyline that broke them up,” she said. “It just goes to show what you’ll do based off your [fandom]. I’d say to myself, ‘I don’t care that the world is going to hate me for a little bit, I get to be on Gilmore Girls. I get to take pictures of Taylor Doose’s market on set.’”

“I think that’s a super cool thing about Gilmore Girls,” she continued, “how they highlighted how important it is to be educated and to be intelligent; how cool it is to be a girl, and to be really smart, and to not apologize for it. I thought that was a really cool thing the show did — in the character of Rory, and then I feel like I got to do a little bit of that with April, too.”

Marano will appear in The Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life revival, where she’ll reprise her role. This time around, we’ll like her character a little more. Hopefully.
