Tommy Hilfiger Says He Never Called Gigi Hadid Fat

Yesterday (Nov. 2, 2016), Tommy Hilfiger received a lot of backlash after he seemingly admitted he didn’t think Gigi Hadid was thin enough to flaunt her body on the runway.

In an interview with Yahoo! Style, Hilfiger revealed Hadid wore a red poncho while walking in last year’s Tommy Hilfiger fashion show because she wasn’t as thin as the other models. Now, Hilfiger is trying to clear the air. In a brief interview with Page Six, Hilfiger clarified the comments about Hadid’s body were made by “casting people,” and he was very disappointed in their decision.

“The casting people put Gigi in the poncho, and I was not happy. I was saying, ‘Don’t hide her body.’ Even though the poncho ended up being the best-selling piece, I was very unhappy,” he explained.  “The suggestion that I thought she wasn’t thin enough upsets me to no end. Gigi is the epitome of perfection.”

Further proving his point that he believes Hadid is “perfection,” he pointed out that he wouldn’t have decided to work with her if he thought anything less of her. “I am proud to have her as the face of my brand and proud to have her collaborate with me. There’s no other girl like her in the entire fashion world — not only because of her beauty, but because of her style,” he said. “We worked with her to design a line — designers don’t usually let models design with them — she had a style we thought was incredible.”

“She opened and closed the show in the bikini, because she’s our No. 1 model,” he continued. “She would not be the Tommy girl if I didn’t think she was perfection, the It Girl of today, not just because of her face, not just because of her body, but because of who she is.”
