Here’s Your First Look at Rihanna in ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’

Rihanna Signs Up for Another Movie
She's heading back to the silver screen.

Ocean’s Eight isn’t only Rihanna’s next big movie project.

The singer is set to appear in Luc Besson’s much talked-about Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets next summer and — thanks to Entertainment Weekly — we now have our first glimpse of the singer in her saucy new role. Though the trailer for the sci-fi epic has yet to be released, teasers of Rihanna’s character has hit the web, including a .GIF that’s totally giving us serious “Umbrella” throwback vibes.

Decked out in a 1920s flapper getup, our favorite Bad Gal dances on stage in a Cabaret-esque as Dane DeHaan, who plays the titular Valerian, watches from a chair.

“Rihanna was my first wish,” Besson tells Entertainment Weekly. “First, because of her voice and the way she smiles and looks and how she expresses herself. Second, because you know she won’t be intimidated on the set. She plays stadiums with 100,000 people. You know that girl isn’t shy about the camera and the crew and all this.”

According to the director, Rih was totally on board with the role. He adds that her part will be more than just a brief cameo in the flick, which also stars model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne, and that she’ll have more than 20 minutes of screen time.

“She was very direct with me,” he says. “She said ‘Luc, I want to learn, I want to work. Just let me do it.’ And I must say that she was a great partner and did everything I asked … And believe me — I asked too much.”

Valerian is due out in theaters on July 21, 2017.
