New Petition Calls for Electoral College to Pick Hillary Clinton as President, Not Donald Trump
A new petition on Change.org is asking the Electoral College to elect Hillary Clinton as president and have gathered over half the signatures (500K and counting) needed to be sent to the governing body.
The petition launched Wednesday (Nov. 9, 2016) in response to Donald Trump being elected the 45th President of the United States and calls for the Electoral College to “ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton.”
Here’s how it works:
The Electoral College is comprised of 538 electors from each state. When American citizens vote, they aren’t directly voting for president. Instead, they are voting for electors. Trump was able to secure 279 electoral votes over Clinton’s 228. The former Secretary of State, however, won the nation’s popular vote.
The college then gathers to cast their votes on Dec.19 and declare the official winner. Although there is no Constitutional provision or federal law that requires electors to vote a certain way, most electors follow suit with who was originally chosen as president.
There could be, however, what is called “faithless electors” who can vote for the other guy. In many cases, “faithless electors” are forced to pay a fine if they vote against the popular choice. Maine and Nebraska follow a different method, called the congressional district method, which allots two electoral votes to the popular vote winner, and additional votes for each congressional district won by the candidates.
Faithless electors have not yet reversed the presidency, but this Change.org petition really hopes to change that, saying that Clinton supporters would happily pay the fines if the electors changed their votes.
“Mr. Trump is unfit to serve,” the petition claimed. “His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic. Secretary Clinton WON THE POPULAR VOTE and should be President.”

Meanwhile, anti-Trump protests have been going on all over the country, with Clinton supporters chanting, “Not My President” and “Love Trumps Hate.”
