2016 American Music Awards: Selena Gomez Returns to the Red Carpet

Selena Gomez Checks into Rehab
She made the decision to help restore her mental health

Selena Gomez made her return into the public eye at the 2016 American Music Awards after she pressed pause on her career to focus on her health.

Gomez wore a flowing, bright red gown on the red carpet of the AMAs on Sunday (Nov. 20, 2016). Her appearance was a pleasant surprise for her fans given that she announced a self-imposed hiatus back in August when the side effects of lupus were taking a toll on her well-being.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” Gomez told People. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”

Gomez continued, “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.”

It was reported in October that Gomez checked into rehab to assist with restoring her mental health. Later, in the week leading up to the AMAs, it was rumored that she would make an appearance at the awards show. Her presence at the show was confirmed by her makeup artist Hung Vanngo on the night of the ceremony when he posted a behind-the-scenes photo of Gomez. “Reunited with this amazing lady today for the AMAs,” wrote Vanngo in the caption.

Gomez is nominated for two awards this year, including Artist of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist.
