WATCH: Selena Gomez Breaks Down During Her Acceptance Speech at 2016 American Music Awards
Selena Gomez opened up about her current mental state while accepting the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Female at the 2016 American Music Awards.
Taking the stage on Sunday (Nov. 20, 2016) at her first public appearance since taking time off to focus on her mental health, Gomez openly spoke about her struggles with depression anxiety. Holding back tears, the 24-year-old told the crowd about her decision to seek treatment.
“In 2014, this stage was the first time that I was authentically 100 percent honest with all of you,” she said as her voice began to shake. “I had to stop ’cause I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. And I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to let me down.”
“I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore,” she continued. “All I can say from the bottom of my heart is that I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love every single day with people that I love.”
Thanking for fans for being “so damn loyal,” Gomez noted that her dark days are behind her.
“If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken,” she concluded. “Whether you respect me or not, that’s one thing you should know about me—is I care about people.”
