‘Fantastic Beasts’ Star Colin Farrell Said He Melted and Drank Ice Cream to Gain Weight for a Previous Role
Right now, you can catch Colin Farrell as the grim and terrifying Percival Graves in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but before he was chasing wizards around New York, the Irish actor had to gain a lot of weight to play a desperate bachelor in The Lobster. In order to pack on the pounds, the 40-year-old thespian got creative.
“I ate a lot of ice cream,” he told Yahoo Movies. “I would just melt it in the microwave and chug it back. And cheeseburgers and fried foods for breakfast.”
But, according to Farrell, eating sugary treats because you need to makes indulging far less fun.
“It gets boring when you have to eat,” he continued. “Part of the fun of doing it is knowing you’re not supposed to. When you have the directive that you’re supposed to, it got very boring very fast.”
As for Fantastic Beasts, although Farrell admits J.K. Rowling’s latest foray in her wizarding world is something special, he looks forward to returning to indie projects.
“Usually in independent films, which I probably prefer, you’re dealing with decent long takes all the time,” he explained. “The process is a lot more simple, and within that simplicity, it allows you a lot more freedom.”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is in theaters now.
