Actor Ron Glass of ‘Barney Miller,’ ‘Firefly’ Fame Dead at 71

Veteran actor Ron Glass, best known for his roles in the ’70s sitcom Barney Miller and sci-fi hit Firefly, has died. He was 71.

According to EW.com, the actor’s rep confirmed Glass died late Friday (Nov. 25, 2016) of respiratory failure.

Glass started his career with small TV roles but found major success playing the dapper detective Ron Harris on the long-running hit series Barney Miller, which earned Glass an Emmy nomination in 1982 for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy.

Then, in 2002, Glass joined Joss Whedon’s Firefly, portraying Shepherd Book on the cult sci-fi series and reprising the role in the 2005 movie Serenity. The veteran actor continued working mostly in TV for the rest of his career, with appearances in CSI and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Glass’ Firefly costar Alan Tudyk tweeted, “Ron Glass was one of the greatest actors to work with. His laugh was beyond infectious and his generosity was ever present,” adding, “a sassy smartass and I prize that very much. A leaf on the wind.”

Nathan Fillion also posted an Instagram tribute.

“Shepard, don’t move.” “Won’t go far.” We love you, Ron Glass. Don’t go far.
