WATCH: New Trailer for Lifetime’s ‘Beaches’ Has Us All Weepy

'Beaches' Is Getting a Remake Starring Idina Menzel
Lifetime TV has decided to give a contemporary update to the 1988 Garry Marshall film, Beaches, starring Broadway star Idina Menzel

Lifetime released the first trailer for Beaches on Monday (Nov. 28, 2016), the cable channel’s TV remake of the 1988 Garry Marshall drama. Let’s just say we’re definitely tearing up.

Idina Menzel takes on the Bette Midler role, playing the aspiring singer/actress C.C., while Nia Long plays C.C.’s childhood best friend, Hillary, portrayed by Barbara Hershey in the original.

From the looks of the trailer, the TV movie follows the original movie, with C.C. and Hillary meeting as young girls on a beach, taking pictures in a photo booth, and eventually going through marriage, career, loss and motherhood as BFFs. Then there’s that tearjerker of an ending. Watch the trailer above!

The remake will also feature new versions of [both of] the film’s iconic songs “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “The Glory of Love,” sung by the Tony-winning Menzel.

Midler gave Menzel her stamp of approval in August, tweeting, “Can’t wait to see Idina Menzel as CC in Lifetime’s Beaches! DON’T TELL ME THE ENDING!”

Beaches premieres on January 21 on Lifetime.
