Michelle Williams Talks Tackling Parenthood Without Heath Ledger
Michelle Williams covers the newest issue of Porter and in the accompanying interview, the bombshell discussed finding herself raising a child alone in her mid-thirties, something she never saw coming, as well as the void Heath Ledger left when he died in 2008.
“In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I’m a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you’ve been,” she said. “In pretty much all senses but one, I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad. You know, that’s just something that doesn’t… I mean, it just won’t ever be right.”
Williams and Ledger met on the set of Brokeback Mountain and had a daughter together, Matilda Rose, who is now 11 years old. And although she and Ledger parted ways in 2007, his absence as a co-parent has frequently been felt in this small family.
“Talk about a learning process,” Williams said when asked about trying to date as a parent. “I think, God, what would I say about it? I feel really sensitive about it and certainly did not expect to still be dating at 36 with an 11-year-old. This is not what I imagine.”
According to Williams’ closest friend Busy Philipps, perhaps the Hollywood community is in a particularly matrimonial phase, and it might take some time for the right bachelor to come along.
“My friend Busy and her husband Marc [Silverstein] said, ‘Michelle, you’re in like a blackout zone, everybody is now partnered up and you have to wait for people to start getting divorced,’” she explained.
Williams made it clear that she does not prefer this theory: “Oh my fucking God. Are you kidding me? I’m just sitting around and waiting for marriages to crumble? Oh wow! No!”
