Hillary Clinton Calls for an End to Fake News
Over a weekend, a man walked into a pizzeria in Washington D.C. and fired a rifle. Why? Because he had read on a fringe news site that the establishment was running a child-trafficking operation with Hillary Clinton. Now, Clinton herself has come forward to encourage elected officials to crack down on these outlets disseminating recklessly false information.
“It’s now clear that so-called fake news can have real-world consequences,” she said in a news conference. “This isn’t about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk. Lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days, to do their jobs, contribute to their communities.”
During her address, she called the spreading of inaccurate information an “epidemic” in the U.S. and urged both Congress and Silicon Valley to combat this threat with swift action.
“It’s a danger that must be addressed and addressed quickly,” she continued. “Bipartisan legislation is making its way through Congress to boost the government’s response to foreign propaganda, and Silicon Valley is starting to grapple with the challenge and threat of fake news. It’s imperative that leaders in both the private sector and the public sector step up to protect our democracy, and innocent lives.”
