‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Dies of Cancer a Week Before Her Episode Airs

Jeopardy! contestant, Cindy Stowell, died one week before her episode was slated to air.

The science content developer, who taped her appearance on the show back in August, passed away on Monday (Dec. 6, 2016) at age 41. The episode, which is scheduled to air on Dec. 13, will be the first posthumous airing of a contestant’s participation Jeopardy!‘s history.

“When Cindy Stowell taped her appearance on Jeopardy!, she had Stage IV cancer,” said host Alex Trebek in a statement. “Competing on Jeopardy! was a lifelong dream for Cindy, and we’re glad she was able to do so. Sadly, Cindy died on Dec. 5. All of us at Jeopardy! offer our condolences and best wishes to her family and friends.”

Her death was announced on social media by her longtime boyfriend Jason Hess.

This may just be the most bittersweet story in game show history.
