Louis Tomlinson returned to The X-Factor Saturday night (Dec. 10, 2016), just three days after his mother passed away. On the show, Tomlinson debuted his first single as a solo artist, according to E! News.

Collaborating with DJ Steve Aoki, the singer performed “Just Hold On,” which has since taken the Number One spot on the iTunes charts.

Following his performance, Tomlinson’s former mentor, Simon Cowell, had kind words for him. “What you’ve just done, and the bravery,” Cowell said. “I respect you as an artist and I respect you as a person. Your mom was so proud of you Louis; she was so looking forward to tonight.”

Tomlinson lost his mother, Johannah Deakin, on Wednesday Dec. 7, 2016 to leukemia. She was 42 years old. Shortly after her death, Tomlinsons former bandmates reached out with support.

“Love you bro! All of your family is in my prayers,” Zayn Malik tweeted. “Proud of your strength and know your mum is too.”
