How Much Is Jimmy Kimmel Getting Paid to Host the Oscars?

Jimmy Kimmel revealed how much he’s getting paid to host the 2017 Academy Awards.

During his visit to KROQ’s The Kevin & Bean Show, Kimmel disclosed that he will receive $15,000 to emcee the 89th Academy Awards. Kimmel acknowledged that his stipend is pretty low considering the scale of the event and offered a hypothesis as to why he’s getting paid at all. “I think it’s illegal to pay nothing,” he joked.

The hosts asked Kimmel if his pay is similar to those of previous hosts like Chris Rock and Billy Crystal. “That’s what they told me,” he said.

“I’m not sure I was supposed to reveal this,” Kimmel said of the discussion of his salary, “but nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault.”

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host joked that the reason why he was selected as the host so late in the game in comparison to years past was because nobody wanted him. “They asked like 14 people and they all said no and then there was me,” he laughed. “I absolutely was surprised.”

Kimmel hosted the Emmys in September and has hosted an Oscars aftershow immediately following the ceremony every year on ABC. The hosts of The Kevin & Bean Show asked him if he’ll still produce an aftershow this year. “We’ll figure something out,” he responded.

The 89th Academy Awards air Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, on ABC.
