Apparently, Mariah Carey Doesn’t Know Ariana Grande or Demi Lovato Either
Mariah Carey is no stranger to shade, but even by her standards, her latest visit to Watch What Happens Live was shady af.
Carey is infamous for confessing that she doesn’t “know” Jennifer Lopez, so for her latest appearance, host Andy Cohen decided to debut a new segment called, Does She Know Her, in which Carey reveals whether or not she knows other pop divas. Before the segment began, Cohen checked once more to see if Carey finally knows who Lopez is, to which she insisted, she doesn’t.
As for the other pop divas, not everyone got the cold shoulder. Carey admitted to knowing Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, saying they both came to her Christmas show, as well as Taylor Swift, who she called a “very nice girl.” But the singer couldn’t contain her shade for long, insisting she doesn’t know Ariana Grande, despite the fact the two have often been compared.
When Cohen pointed out that he thought of the beginning of Grande’s career as an “homage” to Carey she replied, “Child, I don’t know when early in the career was.” Carey then made a feeble attempt to cover her shade by saying she wasn’t “familiar” with Grande because she listens to more hip-hop than pop.
Soon after explaining why she didn’t know Grande, the segment came to an end, but the shade did not. Later on in the episode, Carey played a round of Plead the Fifth and ended up having a few words for none other than Demi Lovato.
For his last question, Cohen asked Carey how she felt about Lovato’s comments earlier this year saying, “It’s nasty the way she treats Jennifer.” Carey rolled her eyes and promptly let Cohen know exactly how she felt about Lovato’s shady comments saying, “I don’t know her either, so I wouldn’t say anything to her. She should come up, introduce herself to me, say ‘Here’s my opinion, what do you think about it?’ That’s how you handle shit, ok?”
As for her budding romance with backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, Carey wouldn’t confirm for Cohen whether or not they were officially dating, first saying she’s not “used” to dating, then adding she wanted her fans to watch her reality show Mariah’s World to get the answer. Well for fans who watched last night, Tanaka all but confirmed their romance when he admitted he “loves” the singer during a confessional interview.
“She’s been actually one of the most amazing, supportive people in my career because I’ve worked with her for so long,” he continued. “I’ve been able to see the most real, authentic Mariah Carey. She is extremely thoughtful. She is extremely caring. There’s something so unique about her.”
