11 Surreal Celebrity News Headlines from 2016, Based on Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year applies to celebrity culture just as much as it does to everything else that happened in 2016.

“Surreal” topped the list of the dictionary’s most frequently used words this year, which is ranked based an analysis of site searches and “words that spike because of news events, politics, pop culture, or sports.” Merriam-Webster saw three large spikes in the word’s usage: Once in March after the Brussels terror attacks, again in July during the coup attempt in Turkey and after the terrorist attack in Nice, and finally in November after the U.S. election. Other words that were big this year include “revenant,” “icon,” and “bigly.”

Surreal is defined as something that is “marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream” and is often searched during moments of tragedy and surprise. Here are eleven of the most surreal moments in celebrity news in 2016, in chronological order:
