WATCH: The Trailer for HBO’s Carrie Fisher-Debbie Reynolds Documentary Is Beautiful and Heartbreaking

The first trailer for HBO’s documentary on the lives of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds paints the portrait of a brilliant mother-daughter relationship.

In the short clip from Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Fisher and Reynolds discuss their family’s early days in show business, Reynolds’ waning health, and Fisher’s battle with depression over clips of old home videos and candid contemporary footage. The film, directed by Alexis Bloom and Fisher Stevens, intends to narrate the “story of the family’s complicated love.”

The release date for the documentary was bumped up from its original airdate in March 2017 after both Fisher and Reynolds passed away during the last week of December and will now debut on Jan. 7, 2017, at 8 p.m. on HBO. It premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Footage for the doc was shot between 2014 and 2015 before Reynolds received her Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, which was presented to her by her daughter.
