WATCH: Kesha Cries While Talking About ‘Devastating’ Dr. Luke Lawsuit
The “Tik Tok” singer breaks down in tears during a new video interview with Noisey, calling ordeal one of the most “devastating” things she’s experienced in her life. Though she still can’t go into detail about the ongoing legal battle, Kesha is visibly shaken as she touches upon the subject.
“When you work really hard at something, then to have it taken away from you is pretty devastating,” the 29-year-old, who signed with Dr. Luke’s label when she was just 18, shares. “I worked my ass off for a lot of years to be able to do it: I sang backup vocals and the first couple songs I was on, I didn’t give a f*ck ’cause I just had this one vision. Once you earn that and make that happen, then to have it taken away from you is pretty devastating. It is definitely like a mindf*ck.”
In 2014, Kesha sued Dr. Luke, accusing her longtime collaborator for “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally” abusing her for the past decade. Dr. Luke (born Lukasz Gottwald) denied the allegations of rape and countersued for defamation. Last February, the court denied Kesha’s request to be released from her recording contract with Sony, who owns Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records.
Due to the contract, Kesha is prohibited from releasing music outside of Luke’s purview. She hasn’t put out an album since 2012’s Warrior.
“I think I’m just finding my voice in the world,” Kesha says during the sit-down. “The past few years has been me taking my center and myself back.”
In April 2016, a New York judge threw out Kesha’s case against Dr. Luke. That August, the songstress dropped her sexual assault lawsuit in Los Angeles and vowed to continue to pursue her appeals in New York.
