Cleveland Cavaliers player J.R. Smith held his daughter Dakota for the first time after she was born five months earlier than her expected due date.
When Smith’s wife, Jewel Harris, gave birth to Dakota in January, she only weighed one pound.
“We know we’re not the only family going through this, who has been through this, and who will ever go through it, and that’s why we decided to share what we’re going through with you guys,” Smith and Harris explained to their fans in a video posted by Uninterrupted five days after Dakota’s birth. “Please keep us in your prayers, and we’ll do the same for everyone else.”
On Monday (Feb. 6, 2017), Smith finally had the opportunity to hold his daughter and shared a photo of the moment on his Instagram account.
“Today is one of the greatest days of my life,” he wrote in the caption of the photo below. “GOD is GREAT! #DakotaStrong.”
Smith, Harris, and their two older daughters, Demi and Peyton, have been at Dakota’s side at the hospital ever since she was born. Smith recently shared this photo of Demi looking at her baby sister resting inside of her incubator on his Instagram account:
