Nicole Kidman Explains Why Her Clapping Seemed ‘Off’ During the Academy Awards

Viewers of the 2017 Academy Awards were quick to point out that Nicole Kidman’s applause appeared slightly robotic during the ceremony. According to Kidman, there was a good reason why this was so.

While visiting the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday (Mar. 8, 2017), Kidman blamed her odd clapping technique on her Harry Winston rings.

The actress recalled, “I was like, ‘Gosh, I want to clap. I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse, right? ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?'”

The Best Supporting Actress nominee stressed that it was difficult to clap while wearing unfamiliar jewelry that wasn’t her own.

“It was absolutely gorgeous, and I was terrified of damaging it. It’s like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the seal clap?” Kidman added.

Combined, Kidman’s Harry Winston diamonds that she wore on Oscars night were worth a total of 119 karats.

Kidman also touched on the Moonlight-La La Land Best Picture mix-up that was a mystery to viewers at home and in the Dolby Theater on the night of the broadcast.

“It was bizarre,” Kidman began. “I wasn’t sure what was going on. No one in the audience was. Then there was some shuffling, envelopes—and people rushing onstage. I was like, ‘What is going on?’ I thought someone wasn’t well and then I saw people’s faces dropping.”
