Amal Clooney Urges the United Nations to Back ISIS Investigation
Amal Clooney’s impassioned address to the United Nations on Thursday (Mar. 9, 2017) took a backseat to her pregnancy in a disappointing array of internet headlines.
The international human rights lawyer urged the U.N. to pursue an investigation surrounding ISIS’s genocidal crimes against the Yazidi people in Iraq at the session entitled “The Fight against Impunity for Atrocities: Bringing Da’esh to Justice.”
“I am speaking to you, the Iraqi government, and to you, U.N. member states, when I ask: Why? Why has nothing been done?” Clooney stated. “Don’t let ISIS get away with genocide.”
In attendance was Nobel Peace Prize nominee Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi woman who was raped and enslaved by ISIS and is represented by Clooney. Read the full transcript of Clooney’s speech here.
Critics were quick to attack headlines that focused on Clooney’s pregnancy and her stylish maternity clothes rather than her advocacy. Take for instance Hollywood Life’s, “Amal Clooney Puts Her Growing Baby Bump on Display In Chic Yellow Dress for U.N. Speech.“
