Demi Lovato Celebrates Five Years of Sobriety

Demi Lovato celebrated five years of sobriety on Wednesday (Mar. 15, 2017) with a moving Instagram post.

The singer shared a screenshot from her 12 Steps AA Companion app acknowledging that she’s been sober for five years, which is the equivalent of 60 months, 1,827 days, or 43,813 hours.

“So grateful. It’s been quite the journey. So many ups and downs,” Lovato wrote in the caption of the photo below. “So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession. I’m so proud of myself but I couldn’t have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me.”

In 2013, Lovato told Access Hollywood that her dependence on substances influenced risky public behavior, like doing drugs on planes.

“I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” said Lovat. “I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it. … And that was even with somebody (with me), I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me (and) I was able to hide it from them as well.”

She realized that her addiction was out of control when she arrived at an airport at 9 a.m. with a soda bottle full of vodka while en route back to the sober living home that she was living in at the time.

“I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it. When I hit that moment I was like, it’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone.”
