Yes, John Mayer Is Singing About Katy Perry on His New Album
In an interview with The New York Times, Mayer revealed that he is definitely singing bout his former girlfriend of one and a half years in his new single, “Still Feel Like Your Man.”
“Who else would I be thinking about?” he said. “And by the way, it’s a testament to the fact that I have not dated a lot of people in the last five, six years. That was my only relationship. So it’s like, give me this, people.”
The pair dated between 2013 and 2014 before Perry eventually moved on to Orlando Bloom in 2016, but despite his lingering heartbreak, Mayer refuses to remake the video for “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”
“I’m not gonna ever roll around in bedsheets again,” Mayer told the Times.
Instead, the video has sparked controversy for reasons other than the recycling of cheesy ’90s rom-com aesthetics. The single, whose syncopation reminded Mayer of “ancient Japanese R&B” inspired him to develop a video concept that follows suit. The Times described the set being decorated with “a makeshift bamboo forest, a woman in full geisha garb and two people in giant panda suits, making up a bizarre tableau that Mr. Mayer called a ‘disco dojo.'” Mayer defended the video against criticisms of cultural appropriation.
“Part of cultural appropriation is blindness,” said Mayer. “I’m on the right side of the line because it’s an idea for the video that has a very multiethnic casting, and nobody who is white or non-Asian is playing an Asian person.”
He added, “I think we were as sensitive as we could possibly be. It was discussed at every juncture.”
