Simone Biles Doesn’t Need to Explain Why She Wasn’t Smiling on ‘Dancing with the Stars’, But She Did
Simone Biles was criticized by judges after her performance on Monday’s episode of Dancing with the Stars and host Tom Bergeron wanted to know why she didn’t look happy after receiving a few last-minute compliments.
The panel of judges questioned her ability to inject enough emotion into her performances after tackling Paso Doble and Foxtrot routines.
“Your skills are unquestionable,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Biles. “You hit every line with precision and perfection. But once again, I’m going to come back to performance and authenticity about who you are when you perform. … You have this beautiful smile and you are a megastar with your energy, but once in a while, there’s beauty without a smile. There’s beauty in pain and all of the other emotions, and I’d like to see more of that.”
After her second routine, Bergeron asked Biles why she wasn’t smiling in response to the lighthearted comments. The Olympian responded, “Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals.”
Biles and her dance partner Sasha Farber talked to Entertainment Tonight after the show about the frustration she feels in not being able to connect with the judges this season.
“I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it’s just how you take it,” Biles said. “I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don’t see that, I don’t know what more I can do … You don’t know which wild card of sexy or of happy they want to bring, and you almost have to read their minds and find it.”
Biles confessed that she had “tears in her eyes” while she received harsh comments from judges.
“I almost ran to the bathroom at one point, but I pulled it together,” she said.
Bergeron followed up later on his “clumsy question” in a two-part post on Twitter.
