WATCH: Miley Cyrus’ ‘Malibu’ Music Video Is a Subtle Love Letter to Liam Hemsworth
A complete departure from previous party-centric clips like “We Can’t Stop,” the new visuals feature a toned down Cyrus frolicking around the titular town. In one shot, the 24-year-old is seen singing under a waterfall before hitting the beach with a bouquet of colorful balloons.
“I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me / I’d be here writing this song / But here I am, next to you / The sky’s more blue in Malibu,” she croons in a field of wildflowers.
Though Cyrus changes in a variety of white outfits — including a crochet bikini and an embroidered dress similar to the one that sparked wedding rumors earlier this year — throughout the video, she’s constantly seen wearing the 3.5 carat diamond engagement ring Hemsworth gave to her five years ago.
“This is really weird because this is like real jewelry and most of my jewelry is made out of gummy bears and cotton candy,” she said of the Neil Lane bauble back in 2016. “I [told Liam] like this isn’t really my aesthetic but I’ll wear it because you love me.”
Aside from the ring, the neighborhood of Malibu is also something close to Cyrus’ heart. Shortly after reconciling with Hemsworth in 2016, she bought a $2.5 million home in the seaside community so she could be with her beau.
