Stan Lee’s Most Unforgettable Characters: The Silver Surfer

When working on a new Fantastic Four story, penciller Jack Kirby handed Lee pencil art with “a nut on some sort of flying surfboard.” And it was then that the Silver Surfer was born. With the help of the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer was able to rediscover his noble spirit and help save Earth, making himself a hero and an exile from his home plant, Galactus. The character made his debut in Fantastic Four #48 in March 1966, and was later made a solo title The Silver Surfer the following year. While the series was short-lived, it has become known as one of Lee’s most thoughtful works. In 2011, IGN ranked Silver Surfer 41st in its Top 100 Comic Heroes list.
