The 66th annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning by actors Terrance Howard and Rainn Wilson. Votes are cast by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). NBC will televise the live ceremony at 8 p.m. on January 11, 2009.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, and Frost/Nixon, starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella, lead the pack with five nominations each.
Curiously, Blanchett was overlooked in the actress category for Button. But one leading lady who is probably celebrating is Anne Hathaway, as the HFPA gave her Best Actress notice for her role in the gritty drama Rachel Getting Married.
Hathaway's Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep is up against her for her role in the Catholic church drama Doubt. Streep is also nominated in the comedy/musical category for her part in Mamma Mia!
A-list couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie each received top acting nominations, for Button and Changeling, respectively.
Not surprisingly, Heath Ledger posthumously received a nod for his supporting actor role in Dark Knight.
What is surprising is that James Franco was singled out for Pineapple Express, rather than Milk.
Television show 30 Rock received nominations for best comedy series, best actor (Alec Baldwin) and best actress (Tina Fey).
