I love me a good controversy. I feed off of it like a baby to mother's milk. When that controversy involves sex, it's like malted chocolate milk pouring forth from the maternal teat.
But this current Adam Lambert jazz about double standards and censorship—there's simply no "there" there.
Gay men and women have long since suffered under the yoke of small-minded people, enacting closed-minded rules, to try and never-mind people out of existence simply because they disapprove of who happens to give them the hots. There's a long history of oppression, discrimination, and, yes, double standards.
But does the reaction to the pseudo-sexy Lambert performance at the American Music Awards really signifiy another sad milestone in the history of gay oppression, or is it, as I would argue, a pre-arranged, attention-grabbing stunt to sell records?
There has been tons of controversy over past performances by Madonna, Britney Spears and other artists deemed "overly sexual." Way back in 1956, CBS was convinced that Elvis Presley was stuffing his pants with a Coke bottle and ordered their cameras to shoot him "waist up" only when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.
Is there a double-standard, in that media outlets might show girls being sexual with boys (or even girls with girls). but somehow deem male-on-male public displays of sex-fection as patently offensive? I'll grant Lambert a "maybe."
However, overall, I can't remember a time when a celebrity "coming out" had less fanfare that Adam Lambert's. It's like he jumped out of the closet and nobody was there to gasp. So he ran back inside for a Take Two when America would be watching. And, still, the gasping has been pretty minimal.
It's my opinion that Adam's big social moment has passed. It was during American Idol when he could have had a platform to really present a courageous message about sexual identity. But that moment passed.
As much as Adam's trying to turn this issue into a bellweather moment for gay rights—I simply find it far too contrived and convenient to put it even up for consideration.

You're another one of those people who are whining that he didn't come out during american idol? What difference does it make?
I don't give a damn that Adam Lambert is gay? My question is when are gays going to act like normal people and stop flaunting their gayness with outrageous acts and displays, as well as these insipid "gay pride" parades. So you're gay. Why do you need a parade to show pride, or more like flaunt you fag-ness. No need to for crazy antics to gain publicity. Nobody that matters truly gives a sh*t that you're gay.
The displays of gayness are tired and lame.
Your article makes no sense. He didn't come out during Idol because in his mind he was never in. This AMA appearance was not an attempt to come out on a bigger scale. In his mind we all know. Didn't we? Yes! To think otherwise is ridiculous. He gave a sexual performance as an adult performer (the song demanded it as did ABC who kept saying stay tuned for Adam Lambert...shocking....what everyone will be talking about tomorrow....they git it....the they get to act shocked) Because he is a gay man he was comfortable using another male as the object of his affection and instead of that signifiying his comfort with who he is....bigots like you see it as a calculated cynical move. It would have bee calculated if he kissed a girl then he wouldn't have to put up with this crap. As a fan I would have rather he just stood and sang so we would be talking about his talent...but know I see he has started an important conversation. Both gay and straight critics are attacking him. Not gay enough. Too gay. Maybe we are at time when someone can just be themselves. How radical is that? He made history. Now let's focus on an amazing debut CD
Joe, I respect intelligent arguments but you are a fool. So you are saying be gay but be gay behind closed doors. Stop flaunting your gayness. You don't seem to get that even admitting to being gay is flaunting it to you...and a lot of bigots. I can't hold my partners hand in public without someone like you saying I am perverted. Jus imagine if the same things were said to you about your presumed "staightness". You wouldn't feel so good about that would you? What about Eminem flaunting his Slim Shady rapes? Is that all cool with you? Just part of being in the majority I guess. If you are young open your mind. If you are old you are a dying breed. Bye.
well said ryang! well said...
its so strange to me that human being find human behavior detestable. since when is being in love and being yourself a sin, and a vile thing. why is homosexuality an issue? there is nothing more beautiful then to individuals who are deeply in love, but people can't see past there ignorance, and their ancient holy books to see it. they won't allow themselves too, and its such a sad thing. people are missing out on the beauty of this life when they waste time hating other people for being who and what they are. the religious institution will not let this be, they well continue to hate in the name of their gods. i think that they believe that the more they hate homosexuals and the lifestyle the more the god they believe in will love them. then i would have to ask, where is the love in this god and man equation? just a question/thought. who the hell cares about adam lamberts lifestyle. its not hurting anyone. i don't get why this is such a big deal. EQUAL RIGHTS AND FREE SPEECH IS WHAT MAKES AMERICA SO f*cking GREAT.
The displays of ignornace and homophobia are lame as well. So shut the eff up.
Couldn't agree more with ryang and w. One more thing: people take part in Pride parades, because gays have been oppressed and stigmatised for a long time, thereby being denied any 'pride'. Pride parades are a symbol for stating 'yes, we're gay and that's great the way it is'. That, and an occasion to party like crazy, and who doesn't like that?
My issue with his performance isn't that it was all with men-but that he was doing such nasty things on stage. I could care less which gender he was doing it with! And regarding APPLES' comment, I'm sorry that you have such a bad impression of religion. The only thing God hates is sin, and we are called to be the same way. Hate the sin, not the person. Yes, I think homosexuality is a sin, but I would never hate someone because they're gay. Some of my best friends are gay, and I treat them with love- as God called us to treat everyone, gay or not.
Very strange because on CBS Morning and David Letterman (I think it was HIS late nite show) the keyboard player was there in close ups and was definitely female not male.
