Britney Spears to Open 2008 VMAs

It's official: Despite back-and-forth rumors and denials from her own manager, Britney Spears will be opening this year's Video Music Awards, which air September 7.

"Britney’s back—for REALS—and honestly, we’re probably as amazed and eagerly anxious as you are," says MTV.

Spears came off as less than lively at last year's awards ceremony, but recent months have seen the singer on an upswing.

Aside from scoring a Video of the Year nomination for her "Piece of Me" vid, the singer is set to collaborate with pop kingmaker and former beau Justin Timberlake.

And, perhaps most importantly, she's treadmilled her way back down to her pre-crazy weight.

What sort of zaniness will mark this year's appearance? Maybe she'll go nuts with a set of shears and shave off host Russell Brand's frizzy, rat's-nest coif?

Come on, Brit; give that goofy mom of yours something to really write about!
