UPDATE: National Enquirer Claims No Wrongdoing in Teri Shields' Day Out
UPDATE: The National Enquirer is disputing Brooke Shields' reported claim that a reporter checked her mother, Teri Shields, out of her nursing home for nefarious purposes.
According to the Enquirer's account, the elder Shields has known the reporter in question for "more than 10 years," and during a visit to her nursing home Shields asked the reporter to bring her on some errands, including a trip to the bank, and take her out to lunch.
"At no point did the facility, which had given its permission for the outing, contend that there had been any wrongdoing in a situation where two people who had known each for more than a decade," the Enquirer claims.
Apparently, some journalists will do anything for an exclusive.
Pretty Baby actress Brooke Shields told People magazine on Friday that her mother, 75-year-old Teri Shields, was checked out of her Old Tappan, New Jersey, nursing home on Thursday by two National Enquirer reporters seeking a "tabloid story."
The elder Shields, who suffers from dementia, was later found unharmed at a restaurant next to the assisted living center.
"I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorized this despicable act," Shields declared.
Shields says that, on late Thursday afternoon, Old Tappan Police told her that two National Enquirer reporters "who falsely claimed they were friends of [Teri's]" checked Teri out of the nursing home.
"They then drove my 75-year-old mother around looking for a tabloid story," Shields continued. "As anyone knows who has a parent who suffers from dementia or Alzheimer's, it is one of the most difficult experiences you can go through as a son or daughter. The idea that the National Enquirer took advantage of her state is reprehensible and disgusting."
Captain Thomas Shine of the Old Tappan Police Department says that officers were called to the nursing home at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday to look for Shields, and were told by a facility supervisor that she had been checked out.
"Our officer located her with some form of a journalist, I think a freelance journalist, in an eatery right next door," Shine noted. "She wasn't harmed in any way shape or form. She was fine. The officers discussed the circumstances with her. And she literally walked with one of my officers next door to the assisted living center."
No charges have yet been filed, but police are investigating "who allowed her to leave the facility," according to Shine, who adds that one of the journalists did seem "familiar to Mrs. Shields."

I'm going to hell because this made me laugh. The tabloids are so shady.
Guilty.
BROOKE SHIELD'S MOM: THE BORING TRUTH
A freelance reporter who has known Teri Shields for more than 10 years visited her Thursday at the assisted living facility where Brooke says she moved her.
Teri asked the reporter to take her out to lunch and to run some errands. The freelance reporter then got permission from the facility to do so.
Teri wanted to go to her old house, so the reporter took her there.
She also asked if they could stop at her bank.
Afterward they went to a restaurant next to the assisted living facility and spent time together catching up. Teri ate a cheeseburger.
Teri has long considered this reporter a friend.
Teri returned to the facility in the afternoon.
At no point did the facility, which had given its permission for the outing, contend that there had been any wrongdoing in a situation where two people who had known each for more than a decade.
Even when police were wrongly called in, they confirmed that Teri had left the facility with permission and that no wrongdoing had been committed.
Kind of boring, but those are the simple facts.
To quote lylian from Just Jareds:
.
Unless the reporter had visited Teri previously as a friend, NE’s story does not hold wa ter. Of course Teri might have kn own the reporter some years ago, Te ri was after all, Brooke Shields mo ther and manager for years. But th at doesn’t mean the reporter was Teri’s friend.
.
So for a report er to show up one day out of the bl ue to take Teri, a woman suffer ing from dementia - with moment s of lucidity perhaps, out for te a and auld lang syne, well, NE obv iously knows that there are lots o f people out there who will buy th e brooklyn bridge - after all, t hey buy NE.

Brooke should sue an d put NE in bankruptcy. They are d ing so badly, they can't be far of f chapter 11 now.
Yeah, I don't believe the National Enquirer's version either. The reporter is probably someone who hounded Teri Shields periodically, then recognized a moment of weakness and tried to exploit it. If the reporter was really a friend of Teri Shields for more than 10 years, Brooke would have known it and wouldn't have gone to the media about it.
Something doesn't add up about this story...
Please, why would they go through all that effort for Brooke Shields? No one even gives a damn about her...except maybe a few of her "celebrity friends". Give me a break!
Could Brooke be on a guilt trip? The poor woman likely longed for a friend she could talk to. How often does she visit her mother??? Can you imagine how lonely she might have been. Apparently she had it all together or they would have screened her visitors. Sooooo, perhaps it is not dementia after all????
