Bio

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949 in New Jersey. His father worked as a bus driver and his mother worked as a legal secretary. He has two sisters, an older sister named Virginia, and an older sister named Pamela. Bruce got inspired to take music lessons when he saw Elvis Presley perform on The Toast of the Town. At thirteen, he purchased his first guitar for eighteen dollars, and when he was sixteen, his mother took out a loan to purchase him a Kent guitar. In 1965, he became the lead guitarist in a band called The Castiles, although he would later become the bands lead singer. From 1969-1971, he performed in a band called Child with Steve Van Zandt, Danny Federici, and Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez. The band was renamed to Steel Mill once guitarist Robbin Thompson joined. In 1972, he signed a record deal with Colombia Records and released his debut album titled Greetings from Ashbury Park, N.J. with his New Jersey band mates, who would later be called “The E Street Band.” In 1973, the album had incredible success, and so did their sophomore album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, which was released in September 1973. In 1975, their third album Born to Run was released and it had both commercial and critical success for Springsteen and the band. In 1977, he returned to the studio after a two year legal battle with his former manager and produced the album Darkness on the Edge of Town. It was released in 1978 and became a huge turning point musically for his career. His next two albums, The River and Nebraska had critical success but lacked in commercial success. Springsteen came back with a big bang in 1984 with the release of the album Born in the USA. The album sold 15 million copies nationally and had seven top ten singles. It quickly became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Bruce married for the first time at the age of 35 to actress Julianne Phillips. The marriage helped to boost her acting career, but his traveling took its toll on the marriage and the final straw was when she discovered his affair with singer Patti Scialfa. Their marriage ended in 1989, and he married Patti in 1991. They have three children together: Evan James Springsteen, Jessica Rae, and Sam Ryan Springsteen. After the huge success of Born in the USA, he released a more calm and sedate album in 1987 called Tunnel of Love. The albums released in 1992 were Lucky Town and The Human Touch were very popular. In 1994, he won an academy award for the song Streets of Philadelphia< /i> from the film Philadelphia. After being apart from the E Street Band for many years, they planned a reunion tour, which ended in Madison Square Garden in New York City. In 2002, he released the first album with the full band in 18 years titled The Rising and it became extremely successful. In 2005, he released his third folk album called Devils and Dust followed by We Shall Overcome in 2006, and Magic in 2007. His sixteenth album Working on a Dream was released in January 2009.
